My computer wont recognize my phone through usb?

I have a Toshiba windows 7 and i've called in tech support 4 times in one night..i restarted AND rebooted my computer and lost EVERYTHING because some how the back up didn't work. and yet my phone still wont connect to my computer. Ipod connect fine but my phones dont..they did at first but not anymore
